George Edgar Cheney was the biological father of Ernest, but neither he nor his brother and sister ever knew him as their father. His mother married William Everett Long when Ernie, as he was known by his family, was about 5 years old and William Long was the only father he ever knew. He, and his siblings, took on the surname of Long - after the only father they had known.
Ernie was a very good man, good husband and father. He was the father his stepson, Ace, never had as a youth. Ace spoke very highly of his stepfather. It was Ernie Long who taught Ace, and all his children, to be honest and to put in a good day's work. Ernie lifted Ace to the great man he became and Ace always gave him credit for it.
Ernie and Sarah were married 37 years, and would have been married another 12 years longer if she hadn't preceded him in death by that many years. Sarah's first married didn't last but a few years. Ernie treated her well and they raised a good family together.
Ernie is remembered, honored, and loved by all his family.
